Online slots: how they work under the hood

Slots are the largest category in any online casino and the most automatic: you press a button, a random number generator decides the result, the screen animates it. This page explains the parts all slots share — reels, lines or ways, RTP, volatility, free spins, bonus buys — with examples from the slots reviewed in this guide.

RTP and volatility: the two numbers that matter

RTP tells you how much a game returns on average over the very long run; volatility tells you how that return arrives. Two slots with the same RTP can feel opposite: one pays little and often, the other rarely but big. Extreme-volatility slots such as Duck Hunters and Mental need a budget that can survive long dry spells. Each game's RTP is in its rules and may vary with the configuration the operator chose.

Free spins and bonus buys

Most modern slots concentrate a large part of their return in a bonus feature, usually free spins with an extra twist — multipliers, expanding symbols, growing reels. Some offer a bonus buy: you pay a fixed multiple of the stake and jump straight into the feature. It does not improve the odds; it swaps many small spins for one big decision. Many casino bonus terms forbid buying features while a bonus is active.

From RNG to screen

Each spin's result is decided the moment you press the button, by a random number generator. Animations, near-misses and sounds are presentation. Previous spins do not influence the next one: a slot is never "hot" or "due to pay".

One slot, different sites

The same slot can be offered by a licensed site or an unlicensed one, looking identical. A licence does not change the RNG, but it changes everything around it: deposit limit tools where required, self-exclusion schemes and a regulator above the operator. Check the domain in your regulator's register before opening your first game.

Slots FAQ

Is there a strategy to win at slots?
Not one that changes outcomes: every spin is decided by the random number generator. What you control is the choice of game (RTP and volatility), the stake size and how long you play.
What are ways to win?
A system in which matching symbols on adjacent reels, from the left, pay in any position with no fixed lines. The number of ways depends on how many positions each reel has.
Is a bonus buy worth it?
It shortcuts the path to free spins, at a high price and with roughly the same RTP. It speeds up both possible wins and losses; it is not a way to improve the odds.
