Tennis betting: sets, games and the rule nobody reads
Tennis has no draws and no clock: a match ends when someone wins the required sets. That makes betting look simple and settlement full of detail, especially when a match does not finish. This page explains the main markets and the retirement rule. We do not list any bookmaker's markets or odds.

| Market | What you bet on | Hypothetical example |
|---|---|---|
| Match winner | Who wins | Player A |
| Set betting | The final score in sets | A wins 2-1 |
| Total games | Games played above or below the line | Over 22.5 games |
| Games handicap | Games difference with a line applied | A -3.5 games |
Tie-breaks and counting games
A set reaching 6-6 usually goes to a tie-break, which decides the set and counts as a single game for total games markets. Some events have their own rules for the deciding set. Anyone betting totals should know the format — best of three or best of five sets — because it changes everything.
Retirements: the rule that varies by bookmaker
When a player retires mid-match, bookmakers follow different rules:
- Void match-winner bets if the match is not completed.
- Settle them if at least one set was completed.
- Award the win to the player who advances in the event.
The same bet can therefore win at one bookmaker and be voided at another. Check the rules before betting, especially on matches with a player carrying an injury.
Live tennis
Tennis is one of the most bet-on sports in play: there are point-by-point and game-by-game markets, and odds move with every serve. It is also where stream delay matters most — someone watching on TV may be seconds behind the bookmaker. Set a limit for in-play bets and keep to it; licensed operators in many markets must offer deposit limit tools to help.
Is the bookmaker in the register?
Before betting, check that the bookmaker's domain appears in your regulator's register and that the licence covers sports betting. Outside the register, the retirement rule is whatever the operator chooses to apply that day, with no regulator in your market to ask why.
