Football betting: the most popular markets and how they settle

Football is by far the most bet-on sport in Europe and much of the world. This page explains the most common football markets, how each one is settled and where the surprises usually hide. We do not list any bookmaker's markets or odds.

Handicaps: balancing an uneven match

When one team is a heavy favourite, a handicap gives the other a virtual head start. In a European handicap, the favourite might start at -1: for the bet to win, it must win by two or more. Asian handicaps use half and quarter goals to remove the draw or split the stake across two lines. The bet types guide walks through the maths.

Extra time, penalties and postponed matches

Settlement causes more football betting disputes than anything else. At most bookmakers, standard markets count only 90 minutes plus stoppage time; markets such as "to qualify" include extra time and penalties. Postponed or abandoned matches follow separate rules with deadlines for the game to be played. Every bookmaker writes its own — check them before betting on knockout ties.

Betting on your own club

Backing the team you support is tempting and often expensive: emotion outweighs analysis and the odds do not change because of it. If you do it for fun, treat the stake like the price of a ticket — and do not chase it the next weekend. Deposit limit tools, which licensed operators in many markets must offer, exist precisely for busy football weekends.

Before your first bet slip

Check in your regulator's register that the bookmaker's domain is listed and that the licence covers sports betting. On a site outside the register, settlement rules are whatever the operator writes, and a dispute over a disallowed goal has no regulator in your market to go to.

Football betting FAQ

Does a 1X2 bet include extra time?
As a rule, 1X2 markets settle on the result after regular time plus stoppage time, without extra time or penalties. Check the bookmaker's rules, as some specific markets differ.
What is double chance?
A bet covering two of the three outcomes: 1X (home or draw), X2 (draw or away) or 12 (either team wins). The odds are lower because the risk is too.
How does over/under 2.5 goals work?
You bet on whether the match has three or more goals (over 2.5) or two or fewer (under 2.5). The half goal means the bet cannot be a push.
